AJ’s Ostomy Product Tips & Tricks #4, #5 and #7

Hiya Everyone,

I know, … I can’t count but #6 will come with my favourite smoothie recipe.

As stated before, selecting the right ostomy products is a critical component in your recovery post surgery for every patient, whether you are a young person, senior, or anything in between. The first and most important tip, … be proactive about your health and be uncompromising about finding the right medical supplies that suit your needs (ostomy, wound care, hygiene, dietary supplements, etc.). This was a lifesaving attitude for me in more ways than one, and keeps me feeling positive and in control of my wellness.

Check out Tips #1 and #2 together on Applying Your Flange just the way you want it and getting Ostomy Bag Wear Time right.

Tip # 4: Apply Smith and Nephew Opsite Tape for Greater Security

With much of Canada still in an afterglow of summer heat, swimming, sunning, and sweating is probably part of your day-to-day activities at some level. This means a little less wear time on your appliance. With edges lifting, areas with creases letting loose, or just a full stop failure, a quick tip is to use Opsite Tape (Smith and Nephew Opsite Flexifix) to cover the edges. The tape spans the edge of the flange and onto the skin to add some extra staying power and edge protection for the appliance. I use it year round, it helps keep the frisky parts glued where they should be and I can honestly say it has extended my wear time by at least a day. Best part? It’s not expensive!

Tip # 5: A simple toilet paper trick

Low flow toilets, nearly everyone has one. Problem is, the Ostomate often requires multiple flushes to create the desired effect. The solution? Use 2 squares of Toilet paper – one square on the water, one up the front of the dry bowl, not only is it a splash free landing, but it goes down effortlessly with one flush.

Tip # 7: WypAll by Kimberly-Clark is a great addition

While sounding a bit Blah, these Lint Free Wipes will prove to be a very useful addition to your kit.  As they are large, I rip them into four squares and then fold one in half to wrap around my stoma while the appliance is off. It will collect any moisture or stool while not leaving the dreaded TP 🧻 bits behind. Once you are ready to install the new flange, use a second piece to give everything a final wipe dry.

Many of you know that I have an ileostomy and have worked hard to put my health and wellness forward as a priority. I think these topics are important to share with our community through our website and newsletter as well. I hope you find this helpful and please feel free to write in the comments below and share any Tips n’ Tricks you think could help others!

Thanks,
