Delicious Protein Supplements for Your Ostomy-Conscious Diet
The ostomate diet is a clearly defined one. It must address key nutritional deficiencies that include Vitamin B1, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Calcium, Folic Acid, Magnesium, and Potassium. But it goes beyond the vitamins and minerals. The diet must also factor in the delivery of essential fatty acids (EFA), complex carbohydrates, and protein. Filling these nutritional voids is one thing, doing so in a way that you actually enjoy what you consume is another.
It’s not hard finding EFAs and complex carbs that taste great. They can be consumed conveniently in small portions throughout the day to ensure that your levels are maintained. Protein on the other hand, is not as easy to accommodate when you’re an ostomate on-the-go. Carrying around a can of tuna or chicken breast isn’t all that practical when running around between meetings and errands. Protein supplements become a day to day necessity. But finding ones that don’t maintain a texture like a wad of Big League Chew is a challenge. Fret not folks, we’ve got your covered. Today, we take a look at fan-favorite protein supplements that will cover your nutritional bases without turning off your tastebuds.
Top 8 Tasty Protein Supplements for Ostomates On-the-Go
1. Iron Vegan Sprouted Protein
This big-bite sized treat is so smooth, chocolatey, and creamy tasting that you’ll forget it’s good for you. With each serving packing in 17 grams of plant-derived protein (sprouted grains and seeds) vegan ostomates will have no trouble managing their protein intake. The only concern? Trying not to eat the whole bag in one day! Also available in vanilla. View more.
2. Metagenics UltraInflamX Protein
This supplement product may not get an “A” for flavorful naming conventions but when it comes to a protein powder with an antioxidant punch this is tops. Heck, on the surface the “Pea & Rice” formula may not sound all that tasty, but you know what? It works! Original Spice needs no swath of fruits in the blender to accent the flavor. Simply scoop the powder into your shaker-cup and go. When needed, add water, do the shimmy-shimmy-shake for 30 seconds, and enjoy. View more.
3. Metagenics UltraMeal Rice Protein Bar
There’s nothing like a good protein bar to fill the nutrient void in your day. The Metagenics UltraMeal bar is not only filling and effective, it is the ultimate solution to those frequent chocolate cravings. The Chocolate Fudge flavor will maintain your dietary protein needs while preventing unnecessary trips to Purdy’s. View more.
4. Precision I-PLX Protein Powder
Chocolate Peanut Butter Parfait. Need we say more? Not really, but for the sake of clarity, you not only get to indulge in something that looks like it belongs on a Dairy Queen menu, you gain five unique isolates, three sources of fiber, and two EFAs in one revolutionary (and delicious!) protein supplement. 6. Progressive VegeGreens Protein Bar
We’d be remiss not to follow-up our recommendation of Progressives PhytoBerry bar above without adding its VegeGreens sibling. This plant-based bar holds the same protein count, and adds 1500 mg of a 22-vegetable concentrate blend. Naturally flavored with a dose of berry, even those that don’t salivate over greens will devour this bar without a second thought. View more.

Vega One delivers one of the tastiest treats on this list with its Chocolate Cherry & Almond meal replacement bar. And again, it tastes so great it had to make the cut! View more.

My brother just has a colostomy done. Can he drink a Greek yogurt protein smoothie shake? For a meal replacement? Is it safe?
Hi Liz,
Thanks for you query. A Greek yogurt protein smoothie shake likely is fine to consume, but you should always consult with your doctor and possibly an ET nurse first to get their guidance. You may want to request a referral to a nutritionist who is familiar with this area as well. It would also be a good idea to connect with other ostomates (contact your local ostomy Canada chapter) who have had a similar surgery to get their feedback and experience on nutrition post surgery. Everyone is different, hence getting advice from a few different sources is recommended.
Sincerely,
InnerGood.ca customer care team.
