The backstory of Osto•me Fashion is one many of you may share. A long health journey that brought Paula and her brother Daniel inspiration to create durable and fashionable covers.
This past August I attended the UOAA (United Ostomy Association of America) Conference in Orlando and had the honor to meet Paula & Daniel in person. I’d seen Paula online as we’re both Canadian and advocate for ostomy awareness. Paula lives in Ontario, and I’m in BC, so we’ve never had the pleasure of meeting in person.
I’ve had my colostomy since 2018, and if I’m being honest, I was never one for covers. I made some, or rather, my aunt did; I was more of a supervisor. A few months after my surgery. I found them to be too much hassle, and what I know now is that I wasn’t in the best cover for me and my pouch. I asked Paula and Daniel lots of questions and was amazed at the quality and variety of styles available. I left the booth an hour or so later with 2 covers, Disco and Satin, and a business card. That business card led to a meeting, and we are now partnering with Osto•me Fashion because the product is fantastic and may benefit many of you.
Paula & Daniel’s Osto•me Fashion story:
It all began with a Crohn’s diagnosis and 17 surgeries. The last left me with a permanent ostomy bag at just 19 years old. I was living in the hospital, away from my family, struggling to accept my new body. Those were the darkest months of my life, filled with depression and shame.
One day, a package arrived from Jenny, a close family friend. Inside were custom ostomy covers made just for me. For the first time, I felt excitement instead of embarrassment. That moment changed everything. I realized I didn’t have to hide my ostomy. I could celebrate it.
Jenny and I began sewing covers together. At first, I made a few to match my outfits, but the confidence they gave me was so powerful that I knew I had to share them. My family supported me completely, especially my little brother Daniel. We’ve always been inseparable, and during the year I spent in the hospital during COVID, we both felt the distance. When I decided to turn this into something bigger, Daniel was the first person I called. In 2022, we became co-founders.
We reached out to our grandpa, El Abuelito, who helped us bring our vision to life in Colombia. After 25 tries, he found a group of seamstresses who could create the perfect sample. We sourced the softest fabrics and made sure everyone involved was paid fairly. Daniel ran the business side while I focused on design.
What started as a simple act of love has grown into Osto•me Fashion, a brand rooted in love, radical self-acceptance, and the belief that ostomies deserve to be celebrated.
For too long, I let fear control me. But now, I choose to live boldly. Osto•me Fashion exists to challenge stigma and empower every ostomate to feel confident in their skin.
