AJ’s Ostomy Supplies Tips & Tricks #3 – Applying the Flange / Colostomy Bag Change

Uncategorized No Comments

Hiya Everyone, As stated before, selecting the right ostomy supplies is a critical component in your recovery post surgery for every patient, whether you are a young person, senior, or anything in between. The first and most important tip, … be proactive about your health and be uncompromising about finding the right medical supplies that suit your needs (ostomy, wound care, hygiene, dietary supplements, etc.). This was a lifesaving attitude for me in more ways than one, and keeps me feeling positive and in control of my wellness.

If you missed them, last week I shared Tips #1 and #2 together on Applying Your Flange just the way you want it and getting Ostomy Bag Wear Time right.

Tip # 3: A Second Tip on Applying the Flange

Another simple, yet effective Tip – (as you prep to change your Colostomy or ileostomy bag) when applying the flange to the skin, use a cotton swab to apply pressure around the flange near the stoma and the outside edges to ensure the adhesive is pressed down to the skin and there are no voids under the flange.

The adhesive on the flange is body heat activated, having an area that is not adhered correctly can allow moisture to enter, reducing wear time and possible skin irritation. Be sure the flange is well pressed on!

Many of you know that I have an ileostomy and have worked hard to put my health and wellness forward as a priority. I think these topics are important to share with our community through our website and newsletter as well. I hope you find this helpful and please feel free to write in the comments below and share any Tips n’ Tricks you think could help others!

Thanks,
